Celebrating 80 Years of the Moomins, the Beloved Scandinavian Comic
Independent Finnish watchmaker Stepan Sarpaneva celebrates the 80th anniversary of one of the most famous comic book stories in Scandinavian culture with a special edition named the Sarpaneva Moomin 80. The Moomins are a family of fictional characters created by Swedish-Finnish illustrator Tove Jansson. They have appeared in books, comic strips, TV series, and films, becoming an integral part of Scandinavian culture.
Sarpaneva has previously released several special editions inspired by the Moomin universe and now returns with his latest creation. The Moomin 80 features a three-layer stainless steel dial with a comet-shaped aperture that reveals the hours via a rotating disk at 12 o’clock.
The watch comes in two different versions while retaining the signature elements of Sarpaneva’s craftsmanship, including a distinctive case and a hand-decorated dial adorned with multi-colored Super-LumiNova. The dial design takes inspiration from a page in a Swedish comic strip.
The Moomin 80 is housed in Sarpaneva’s signature case, crafted from high-quality Finnish Outokumpu stainless steel, with a diameter of 42mm and a thickness of 11.4mm. The case is defined by its sharp, angular lugs, with the crown positioned at 4 o’clock. It is protected by sapphire crystal on both sides, ensuring maximum durability, and offers 100 meters of water resistance.
The dial of the Sarpaneva Moomin 80 is the highlight of the design, composed of three layers of stainless steel. Its unique depth is achieved through precision laser cutting and meticulous hand-finishing.
The dial takes its inspiration from a page in the story Comet in Moominland, depicting a sleeping moon among plants with a falling star appearing through the hour aperture. The entire scene is brought to life with multi-colored Super-LumiNova, creating a mesmerizing glow in the dark.
The watch is available in two versions: one with a monochrome dial and another with a multi-colored gradient. Both editions glow vividly in the dark thanks to Super-LumiNova. Hours are displayed using a rotating disk at 12 o’clock, while the central hand indicates the minutes.
At the heart of the Moomin 80 beats the automatic Soprod A10 movement, operating at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz) and providing a power reserve of 42 hours.
The stainless steel rotor is decorated with intricate hand-engraved details that mirror the dial’s artistry, and it features the signature Sarpaneva "Moon Face" emblem, also coated with Super-LumiNova. The watch is available with a selection of leather straps, each limited to just 30 pieces per color. The retail price is €13,500, approximately AED 51,450.
