The King Turtle, Solar Speedtimer, and Sumo in elegant black
The narrative of Seiko unfolds in 1881 when Kintaro Hattori, a 21-year-old entrepreneur, inaugurated a boutique specializing in the sale and repair of watches and clocks in central Tokyo. Since then, Seiko has released an array of timepieces that boast a good quality-to-price ratio. One of the iconic releases is The Seiko Prospex series, a collection that pushed the brand’s boundaries, offering a selection of watches tailored for sports enthusiasts and adventurers, be it underwater, in the skies, or on land. Since introducing Japan's inaugural diver's watch in 1965, Seiko's technology has improved as a result of 50 years of innovation.
This year, the brand announced three new additions to the Seiko Black Series, featuring black hard-coated cases, sleek black dials, and enhanced with vibrant green LumiBrite Pro lume. This new release continues the trend of applying the distinctive Black Series treatment to various Prospex models, and now, enthusiasts can rejoice as one of the most beloved dive watches has joined the lineup. The Seiko Black Series is a special collection of watches designed to evoke the mysterious and elegant atmosphere of the underwater world at night. These watches feature a distinctive black case that symbolizes the darkness and silence of the night ocean.
While undergoing a visual refresh, the fundamental aspects persist. The recently introduced SRPK43 in the Black Series maintains its case and specifications consistent with the preceding King Turtle models. The stainless steel case design, reminiscent of a turtle shell, maintains dimensions of 45mm in diameter and 13.2mm in thickness with a unidirectional black steel bezel featuring a black ceramic insert with a 60-minute scale. The watch received a notable upgrade from mineral glass to sapphire crystal with a magnifier over the day-date window. This latest iteration adopts a black hard coating, or what Seiko calls “Diashield” which is similar to DLC coatings, embracing the aesthetics of the Black Series. The new divers watch comes with a screwed case back ensuring water resistance of 200m (660ft).
An additional distinguishing feature of this fresh Black Series model lies in its matte black dial. Both hands and indices are treated with a durable, light green Lumibrite Pro, Seiko's proprietary luminous material. Powering the watch is the 4R360 caliber, an automatic movement with manual winding capabilities, operating at 21,600 vph (3 Hz) and offering 41 hours of power reserve. The Prospex King Turtle SRPK43 is paired with a triple folding clasp featuring a secure lock, with a push-button release and divers's extender, with a price of EUR 780 which is equivalent to AED 3,140.
The Prospex Solar Speedtimer Black Series is the second watch to join the permanent lineup, alongside the Prospex King Turtle Black Series. This solar-powered chronograph embraces the iconic designs of the 1960s-70s Speedtimer series. The Solar Speedtimer Black Series variant features a black hard-coated stainless steel case, measuring 41.4 mm in diameter and 13 mm in thickness, with a water resistance of 100 meters. Protecting the black dial is a curved sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating on the inner surface.
This variant features a bright Green Lumibrite Pro on the hour and seconds hands, as well as the indexes, emitting a vibrant green glow for visibility in various lighting conditions. The dial includes a date function, 60-minute chronograph and 24-hour counters, along with a power reserve indicator. Powered by Seiko's V192 solar-powered chronograph movement, it provides a six-month power reserve on a full charge. Priced at EUR 700 which is equivalent to AED 2,820, the timepiece comes with a black nylon strap secured by a folding buckle.

The third addition to the Seiko Black Series is a limited edition of 3,500 pieces, the Prospex Sea SPB433, also known as the “Sumo”. The Seiko Sumo has gained popularity as a diver's watch, earning its nickname "Sumo" among Seiko fans due to its substantial size. The new Seiko Prospex Sea Black Series SPB433 features a hard-coated stainless steel case measuring a huge 45 mm in diameter and a reasonable 13.4 mm in thickness. It boasts a sapphire glass, a unidirectional bezel with a black ceramic insert, and a water resistance of 200m. Instead of black, the "Sumo" comes with a gray grained dial showcasing hour markers and hands filled with green LumiBrite, accompanied by a date window at 3 o'clock.
The timepiece is powered by the 6R35 automatic movement, operating at 21,600 vph (3Hz), providing a 70-hour power reserve. The watch is paired with a triple-link steel bracelet featuring a secure lock, push-button release with a diver's extender, and is priced at EUR 1,300, equivalent to AED 5,300.
