The third version of the RM 35-03, with new aesthetics
Richard Mille stands as a pinnacle in luxury Swiss watchmaking, celebrated for its avant-garde designs and high-performance timepieces. Launched in 2001 by the visionary French entrepreneur Richard Mille, the brand has swiftly risen to prominence, earning acclaim for its pioneering approach to materials and state-of-the-art technology in watch craftsmanship. Richard Mille's watches seamlessly integrate cutting-edge materials such as carbon nanofiber, titanium, and other advanced composites, showcasing a dedication to the fusion of aesthetics and functionality. As we approach the end of this year, Richard Mille has released an array of beautiful timepieces, including the RM 72-01 Le Mans Classic, RM 65-01 in Grey Quartz TPT, Three RM 07-01, and RM 21-02 Tourbillon Aerodyne.
Drawing inspiration from the iconic RM 027 Tourbillon collection, famously adorned by Rafa Nadal during intense tennis matches, the brand's commitment to functionality and durability remains a hallmark of its timepieces. Now, Richard Mille has unveiled the RM 35-03 Automatic Rafael Nadal in black Carbon TPT, an automatic watch that introduces the innovative 'butterfly rotor' winding mechanism. This patented feature grants the wearer direct control over the automatic movement's winding, providing a fresh and interactive way to engage with the watch in any situation. A standout feature is the "sport mode" button that is incorporated to disengage the winding rotor on demand, mitigating the risk of over-winding the movement.
The sizing remains identical across the previous two models of the RM 35-03 that consist of blue and white Quartz TPT, and another combining Carbon TPT with white Quartz TPT, measuring at 43.15mm in diameter, and 13.15mm in thickness. Notice the push button at 7 o'clock, by pressing it the rotor's gears elegantly extend the two grade 5 titanium oscillating weights to a precise 180° angle. This alignment of the gravitational center prompts the rotor to effortlessly revert to a balanced position, effectively pausing the winding process. This ingenious mechanism serves as a safeguard, preventing any risk of over-winding and ensuring optimal performance of the movement. With a design reminiscent of a car's gearbox, a push-button situated at 2 o'clock offers a straightforward method to toggle between winding, neutral, and hand-setting functions with a single press just like the RM 21-02 Tourbillon Aerodyne.
The skeletonized dial showcases openworked hands that elegantly extend towards a flange crafted from microblasted grade 5 titanium. Accentuated with numerals at 3, 6, 9, and 12, with an ON/OFF indicator located at 6 o’clock that allows the owner to see the status of the rotor, if it is activated or not. Fueling the timepiece is the RMAL2, an intricately skeletonized automatic movement, with bridges and baseplate that are both crafted from grade 5 titanium. The movement operates at a frequency of 28,800 vph (4 Hz), and offers power reserve of 55 hours. Enhancing timekeeping precision, a double-barrel system manages torque distribution from both barrels, contributing to optimal performance.
