First Look Parmigiani Fleurier Introduces the Tonda PF Perpetual Hijri Calendar Watch (Live Pictures)

A New Addition to the Calendar Watch Collection, Featuring a Steel Case and Green Dial

The Parmigiani Fleurier “Tonda PF” collection contains three dedicated versions of the calendar, the complete Chinese Xiali calendar, the Western Gregorian calendar, and finally the Islamic Hijri calendar. This is what the company considers an artistic and cultural achievement. Now Parmigiani Fleurier presents the new “Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda PF Hijri Calendar” watch in a stainless steel case with a green dial.

The origin of the watch dates back to 2011, when Michele Parmigiani created a desk clock with the Hijri calendar after restoring a pocket watch that had included the Arabic calendar. Less than a decade later, the company's first Hijri calendar watch won the 2020 Innovation Award, at the Geneva Grand Prix of Watches. The company followed it up with a second, more platinum version.

The Tonda PF Hijri Perpetual Calendar is a horological expression of the Tabular Islamic calendar which was developed by Muslim scholars and astronomers in the 8th century. This system makes it possible for historians to convert Islamic dates to Gregorian dates and also makes the Hijri Perpetual Calendar possible. The first year of the Hijri calendar corresponds to the year 622 CE and is marked by the Prophet Muhammad’s Hijrah (Arabic for “migration”) from Mecca to Medina.

The lunar Hijri calendar is based on the cycles of the moon in comparison to the solar Gregorian calendar. This makes for a 30- year cycle with each year consisting of 12 months that are 29 or 30 days long. In each 30-year cycle there are 19 common years consisting of 354 days and 11 abundant years consisting of 355 days.

The new Tonda PF Hijri Perpetual Calendar boasts a case constructed from stainless steel, with a diameter of 42.0 mm and a thickness of 11.2 mm. Its design features alternating satin and polished finishes, enhancing its visual appeal. The case back is securely fastened with four screws and is made of crystal sapphire, offering a clear view of the intricate inner workings of the timepiece. Notably, the signature fluted bezel, crafted from 950 platinum, adds a touch of luxury and sophistication. With a water resistance of 100 meters, this timepiece seamlessly combines elegance with practicality.

The viridian green dial of the Tonda PF Hijri Perpetual Calendar is meticulously hand-finished with a Grain d’Orge guilloche pattern. Its applied hour indices and skeletonized delta hour and minute hands are meticulously crafted from 18k gold and coated with rhodium for added durability. Meanwhile, the second hand and hands of the calendar subdial are constructed from rhodium-plated steel.

This intricate timepiece elegantly presents a wealth of information directly on its dial. At the 12 o’clock position, a subdial displays the 30-year cycle, distinguishing between abundant 355-day years highlighted in beige and standard 354-day years marked in white. Positioned at 3 o’clock, another subdial denotes the numbered months of the year, with the ninth month, Ramadan, distinguished in vibrant red. The 9 o’clock subdial indicates the days of the month, with an aperture indicating whether it's a 30-day abundant month or a 29-day common month. A white aperture indicates a 29-day month, while an activated beige aperture indicates a 30-day month, displaying the number 30 in beige. Lastly, at the 6 o’clock position, a subdial showcases the blue aventurine moon phase display, illustrating the moon's position in both the northern and southern hemispheres.

The Tonda PF Hijri Perpetual Calendar features the Caliber PF009 automatic movement, boasting a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz) and a power reserve lasting 48 hours. This sophisticated mechanism showcases intricately beveled bridges, while its skeletonized rotor, crafted from platinum, is meticulously finished with a polished and sandblasted surface. Furthermore, it is adorned with Côtes de Genève and perlage detailing throughout.

and it is paired with a matching stainless-steel bracelet with a platinum folding clasp. it's priced at CHF 62,500 which is equivalent to 260,000 AED.
