The Excalibur Bi-Retrograde Calendar by Roger Dubuis

This year, Roger Dubuis celebrates its 30th anniversary, and for the occasion, the company pays tribute to its co-founder’s favourite complication: the bi-retrograde display.

This function, previously featured in the Excalibur Grande Complication alongside a dozen other highly complex mechanisms, takes centre stage once again. The Maison has also introduced a less complicated, more classic edition to further honour the bi-retrograde display.

Also referred to as “the ecliptic counters” by the Maison a nod to their elliptical shape and distinctive role in indicating the months and date the design showcases a symmetrical dial layout. Enhanced by refined detailing, it pays homage to the Maison’s early creations from 1996.

Longines has been crafting timepieces since its establishment in 1832. Renowned for its precision and elegant designs, Longines has a rich heritage of creating iconic pilot watches. Among these, the Majetek stands out, originally released in 1935 specifically for the Czechoslovak Air Force.

Following its tradition of blending history with innovation, Longines has re-released the Majetek within the years, incorporating modern upgrades while retaining its classic charm. It earned the nickname Majetek due to the engraving on its caseback that read "Majetek Vojenske Spravy," meaning "Property of the army”. Now, the brand is bringing this icon back once again with a grade 5 titanium case and an elegant matt black dial.

The New Pilot Majetek Pioneer Edition boasts a 43 mm diameter and a thickness of 13.30 mm. Its cushion-shaped case features a blend of brushed and polished surfaces. The watch includes a fluted bi-directional rotating bezel, which controls the placement of a triangular pip used to measure elapsed time or other functions. The case has a sapphire crystal and a closed case back, providing water resistance up to 100 meters.

The side of the case features an engraved plate that reads "1935," paying homage to the original watch's year of production. This number also serves as an indicator of the limited production, as only 1,935 pieces will be made. The grained dial features gray pencil hands and Arabic numerals, all coated with Super-LumiNova that emits a blue glow for enhanced readability in low-light conditions. At the 6 o’clock position lies the small seconds sub-dial, and surrounding the dial is a railtrack minute marker.

The watch is powered by the caliber L893.6, an automatic COSC-certified movement that operates at 28,800 vph (4Hz) and offers 72 hours of power reserve. It comes with a black fabric strap and is priced at CHF 4,550, which is equivalent to AED 18,600.
