Independent Watchmakers Tim and Bart Honor Their Father's Legacy with a New Brand
Bart and Tim Grönefeld, the "Horological Brothers," introduce GRØNE OLDENZAAL, a new line of mechanical timepieces designed to make their unique creations more accessible to watch collectors. Today, November 5, GRØNE is launched in celebration of Bart and Tim’s father Sjef’s birthday, with the brand’s inaugural creation dedicated to him.
“Grönefeld watches often take months or even years to manufacture. With our small team of watchmakers, we currently produce only 70 to 80 watches per year,” Bart and Tim explain. “This has led to long waitlists, and unfortunately, we've had to turn some collectors away. With GRØNE, we aim to bring our timepieces to a broader audience while upholding our high standards in design, aesthetics, and quality.”
Founded in 2008, Grönefeld is a Dutch independent watch brand renowned for intricate craftsmanship and a dedication to haute horology. Their high-end, hand-made watches are priced at a premium, making them exclusive to only a small segment of collectors. With GRØNE, the Grönefeld brothers share their watchmaking tradition in a more accessible price range, creating a new entry point for enthusiasts.
The Manueel One’s 38.5mm case takes inspiration from the Grönefeld 1941 case, one of the most watches bu the company The "1941" in the name is a tribute to the year their father, Sjef Grönefeld, was born. Its bezel features domed surfaces between the lugs with a concave side profile. The crown, with its conical shape, provides comfort during winding and proudly displays the GRØNE brothers' logo—an emblem of the duo's legacy.
Measuring 38.5mm in diameter with a slim profile of 9mm (excluding the sapphire crystal, or 10mm including it), the case is crafted from stainless steel and polished to a mirror finish. Paying tribute to their heritage, the case back is engraved with a 1626 map of Oldenzaal, marking the brothers’ atelier. Around the periphery, a Dutch saying is engraved: “ZOALS HET KLOKJE THUIS TIKT – TIKT HET NERGENS,” meaning, “As the clock ticks at home – it ticks at its best.” This phrase symbolizes the warmth of home, both for the Grönefeld family and the watch’s wearer. The case is water-resistant to 50 meters.
The Manueel One features a central tremblage-finished salmon dial, surrounded by a two-step, brushed rhodium-plated dial with diamond-cut edges, crafted from maillechort. The polished, diamond-cut hour markers are individually applied, with tips that appear to float above the salmon-colored center.
The applied metallic GRØNE logo has a three-dimensional effect, while the words “Oldenzaal,” “Manueel,” and “Netherlands” are printed in a vibrant shade of blue that matches the heat-blued hands, adding to the dial’s cohesive charm.
For their debut timepiece under GRØNE, the Grönefeld brothers selected a manual movement, as they explained: “We want the customer to connect with its mechanics. Each morning, the owner will be reminded of the intricate, hand-wound movement within.”
The GRØNE Manueel One is powered by a Swiss-made Sellita SW210 manual winding caliber, adjusted for the perfect winding torque that the brothers prefer. It offers a 42-hour power reserve and operates at a frequency of 4 Hz.
The watch is paired with a calfskin leather strap and is limited to 388 pieces. Priced at EUR 2,150 (approx. AED 8,600), it will be available for order starting November 19, 2024, with deliveries commencing in December 2024.
