Doxa Unveils The SUB 300T Sharkhunter Clive Cussler
Diving watches play a crucial role in horology, combining functionality and precision with elegant designs. This legacy dates back to the 1950s when diving watches were initially crafted to meet the rigorous demands of the emerging scuba diving sport. These timepieces were designed to handle the unique challenges of underwater time management, offering reliability and durability in harsh marine environments.
The inception of dive watches marked a significant milestone in horological history. One of the pivotal moments came in 1967 when Doxa released the Sub 300, the first dive watch with a unidirectional rotating bezel that was accessible to a broader public. This innovation allowed divers to track their underwater time more accurately and safely. Since then, Doxa has continued to evolve the design of the Sub 300, introducing new sizes and hues to cater to diverse preferences. Today, Doxa is celebrating American novelist Clive Cussler's 93rd birthday with a new limited edition, the SUB 300T Sharkhunter Clive Cussler.
Before we get to the watch, let's talk about who inspired it. Clive Cussler was an adventure novelist with over 85 books to his name. His most famous fictional character, Dirk Pitt, an adventurer and deep-sea expert, wore the iconic Doxa SUB with the orange dial, which played a pivotal role in his adventures. Last year, Doxa paid homage to Cussler's exploration legacy by releasing a SUB 300T with a purposely aged stainless steel case, bracelet, and a handmade dial reminiscent of a vintage compass.
The new SUB 300T Sharkhunter Clive Cussler retains the same case design of the previous release, measuring 42.5mm in diameter and 14mm in thickness. It features a unidirectional bezel with a black 60-minute scale and a red no-decompression scale, a screw-down crown, a flat sapphire crystal, and 300 meters of water resistance. Additional features include a helium escape valve and a screw-down caseback, engraved with the names of shipwrecks and other historical artifacts discovered or explored by Clive Cussler's non-profit agency, NUMA, which is renowned for uncovering countless shipwrecks.
The dial maintains the same compass rose design at its center but now features a new black hue. Additionally, the dial includes hands and indices coated with Super-LumiNova for enhanced visibility and a date display positioned at 3 o'clock with red numerals for 7, 15 and 31 corresponding to the author’s birthday. The watch is powered by the Sellita SW200-1 caliber, an automatic movement that operates at a frequency of 28,800 vph (4Hz), and offers a power reserve of 38 hours.
The watch comes with an aged stainless steel beads-of-rice bracelet with a folding clasp and is also provided with a black FKM rubber strap with a folding clasp. It is limited to 93 pieces and is priced at AED 12,850.
