Watches Surpass Estimated Values Significantly, While Others Fall Below Expectations
The highly anticipated Only Watch auction finally took place yesterday at PALEXPO in Geneva, marking the culmination of a delay stemming from a financial audit and organizational rumors since its original scheduling last November. Despite the setbacks, the event drew considerable attention, with numerous prestigious brands poised to showcase their offerings.
Among the 47 remarkable timepieces from 52 brands, up for grabs, standout pieces included the singular Patek Philippe 6301A Steel Sonnerie Minute Repeater, Kari Voutilainen's exquisite creation, Rexhep Rexhepi's Chronometre, Richard Mille's pioneering necklace watch, and distinctive submissions from Bulgari, Genta, Journe, and Angelus.
However, the auction encountered an unexpected twist as the Christie's website, designated for online bidding, faced IT security issues. Consequently, the auction house promptly informed participants that bidding would be limited to phone or in-person transactions, while the website remained inaccessible at the time of writing.
Despite these challenges, Only Watch 2024 achieved remarkable success, raising CHF 28,320,000 through the sale of all 47 timepieces—a figure comparable to the CHF 29,740,000 generated by the 2021 edition, which featured 53 lots. Notably, as a charitable auction, no buyer's premium was applied, ensuring that the final price reflected the hammer price directly.
The Spring watch sales event drew over 500 attendees including collectors, brands, journalists, and influencers worldwide. It commenced with speeches by Tess Pettavino, Managing Director of the AMM, and Luc Pettavino, Chairman of the non-profit organization, who shared a message from H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco. The Christie's auctioneer then took the stage, leading a dynamic auction that captivated the audience for over two and a half hours, showcasing twists, surprises, and suspense to a dedicated and enthusiastic.
Now, let's delve into the fascinating array of prices realized during this philanthropic endeavor.
