Waqt Celebrates Italy's Republic Day

It was June 2nd Italy's Republic Day, known as Festa della Repubblica, we commemorate a pivotal moment in Italian history. On June 2, 1946, Italians voted to abolish the monarchy and establish a republic, marking the birth of modern Italy. This national holiday, with the main celebration taking place in Rome, honors the rich tapestry of Italy's history and its enduring influence on the world.

Italy is known for its contributions to art, culture and innovation. In addition to its stunning historical monuments and stunning natural landscapes, Italy's heritage is vast and diverse. The name of Rome has shone since ancient times, all the way up to the Renaissance era and the city of Florence witnessed the pioneering inventions of Leonardo da Vinci.

While Italian elegance continues to create new trends around the world, Italy's passion for football is something you can spot in a Serie A match. We all witnessed Inter Milan's victory in the Italian League and their cooperation with Tudor this year.

In addition, Italy's prowess in the field of mechanical engineering and luxury sports cars, with big names like Ferrari, Lamborghini, and Pagani, which we can call Richard Mille, being the first to use carbon in the manufacture of sports cars. Italy is a leader in design and creativity, however, today we will focus on another area in which Italy excels, the world of haute horlogerie.

When it comes to watchmaking, Italy also has deep-rooted traditions in design and close proximity to Switzerland has also contributed to Italy’s success in the watch industry. Several luxurious and high-quality watch brands have originated in this country. Some of which have gained a high global reputation that attracted investors from large Swiss watch companies.

Italian watch brands have made significant strides in the realm of luxury timepieces, blending traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design. These brands reflect the same dedication to precision and style that defines Italy's broader contributions to fashion and engineering. This is our selection of some of the most famous Italian brands.

Bulgari is the first watch brand that comes to mind when thinking of Italian luxury. Established in Rome in 1881, it initially gained fame for its exquisite jewelry creations. When Bulgari ventured into watchmaking, it brought an exceptional blend of Italian elegance and Swiss precision. Bulgari timepieces are known for their distinctive designs, especially their ultra-thin watches in the iconic Octo Finissimo collection.

Panerai is an iconic Italian brand that has left its mark on the watch industry. Founded in Florence in 1860, it initially served as a supplier of precision instruments for the Royal Italian Navy. Today, Panerai watches exemplify Italian ingenuity, known for their bold aesthetics and exceptional craftsmanship.

U-Boat is a young Italian watch brand that was founded in 2000 by Italo Fontana, renowned for his handcrafted and limited edition pieces. The brand draws inspiration from vintage timepieces made for the Italian Navy during World War II. U-Boat watches feature a rugged appeal with large cases, robust construction, and retro-inspired aesthetics.

Another notable Italian watchmaker is Venezianico, a relatively young brand that emerged in late 2017 when brothers Alberto and Alessandro Morelli embarked on their mission to create timepieces reflecting their love for watchmaking and capturing the essence of Venice, their hometown. Inspired by a unique detail atop the ancient Clock Tower in Venice, symbolizing the passage of time in the city, the brothers were driven to establish Venezianico, blending their passions into the creation of a distinctive watch brand.

Anonimo has established a strong reputation in the diving watch category. Founded in Florence in 1997, Anonimo creates diver’s watches that are waterproof to depths exceeding 1000 meters. One of the brand's renowned releases, the Professionale, was successfully tested at a depth of 2000 meters. Leveraging its patented inventions developed in close collaboration with experts and professionals, Anonimo has launched several other collections that showcase exceptional Italian craftsmanship.

If we mention Italian brands, we should mention Gerald Charles too. Yes, you have the right to say it's a Swiss brand located in Lugano, Switzerland. But if we go back to the early 2000s when the legendary watchmaker Gerald Genta founded this brand, the Ziviani family was there to take the brand further when they became partners with Genta.

The Ziviani family did, and still does, a great job. Now under the leadership of Federico Ziviani, the current CEO who visited us last year, had an amazing talk with us as the general manager.

Italy is renowned for its contributions to the world of luxury and style, and its watchmaking industry is no exception. Italian watch brands are celebrated for their innovative designs, superior craftsmanship, and timeless elegance.

Italy is also home to many major watch collectors, such as Guido Mondani, whose impressive collection was recently featured at the 19th Phillips Auction in Geneva. Without forgetting the many independent watchmakers who hold many high positions in the watch industry, many of whom are graduates of Italian schools. To mention but not limited to Luca Soprana, who presented a distinctive watch in honor of the English watchmaker Derek Pratt.

It is true that most of the famous Italian brands belong to major international groups, and are even manufactured outside of Italy, but the Italian influence and traditions remain what distinguishes them.

Italy has made a significant impact on the global watch industry, renowned for its prestigious watchmaking schools and a vibrant community of independent watchmakers. The country boasts a rich tradition of craftsmanship and innovation, contributing to the evolution of horology with a distinct Italian flair. In the near future, we will delve into the stories of these prominent institutions and the talented Italian watchmakers who have left their mark on this timeless craft.
