Celebrating the brand 140th anniversary with new aesthetics for its iconic collection
Breitling’s Navitimer collection is an iconic series that was originally made for pilots, its design features an innovative slide rule bezel, a feature that allows pilots to perform various calculations necessary for flight navigation directly on their wristwatches. This unique functionality, coupled with its intricate dia, has made the Navitimer a common timepiece worn by pilots and astronauts alike.
Last year, the Navitimer collection saw a range of releases, and among these releases was the B01 Chronograph 46. Additionally, the collection expanded to include smaller sizes, catering to a wider audience with the introduction of the Navitimer in 36mm and 32mm variants. As Breitling celebrates its 140th anniversary, the brand pays tribute to two of its iconic timepieces, the Navitimer, and the Cosmonaute (a 24-hour adaptation of the Navitimer) which holds the distinction of being the first Swiss wristwatch worn in space. Breitling has recently introduced updated versions of these esteemed lines, including the Navitimer GMT and Automatic 41, alongside a new iteration of the Cosmonaute.
The new Navitimer Automatic 41 comes in either a stainless steel or 18k red gold case, with another stainless steel variant featuring an 18k red gold bezel. The watch measures 41 mm in diameter and 11.65 mm in thickness. Although we have seen a previous 41 mm Navitimer, this new release features no date window, giving the dial a cleaner look.
The dial is offered in Blue, green, ice blue, or Silver (18k red gold bezel or case) with hands and indices treated with Super-LumiNova. Powering the new Navitimer Automatic 41 is the Caliber 17 an automatic movement that operates at 28,800 vph (4Hz), and offers 38 hours of power reserve. Depending on your choice the watch comes with either Blue or black alligator leather strap with a folding buckle or seven-row Navitimer bracelet with a butterfly clasp. The prices of the stainless steel variants range from AED 21,840 to AED 23,100 for both the leather strap and the bracelet. For the red gold bezel variant, prices range from AED 31,500 to AED 39,900, while the red gold variant's prices range between AED 60,900 and AED 144,900.
Similar to the AUTOMATIC 41 release, the GMT variant comes in a stainless steel or 18k red gold case that measures identically to the AUTOMATIC 41. This release offers a choice between Black, silver, or ice blue dials for the steel variant or a green dial for the red gold variant. The dial features Super-LumiNova on hands and indices, and a date window at 6 o’clock. Since it's a GMT model, it comes with an additional hand.
Powering the timepiece is the Caliber 32, an automatic movement that operates at 4Hz and offers 42 hours of power reserve. Depending on your choice, the watch comes with a black, brown, or blue alligator leather strap with a folding buckle or a seven-row Navitimer bracelet with a butterfly clasp. The prices of the stainless steel variants range from AED 23,730 to AED 24,990 for both the leather strap and the bracelet, while the red gold variant's prices range between AED 63,000 and AED 147,000.
In 1962, astronaut Scott Carpenter of the Mercury Seven group approached Breitling with a unique proposition, to modify the design of the Navitimer for space travel. Impressed by its computational capabilities, the astronaut requested a 24-hour dial to distinguish between day and night during missions in orbit. Breitling accepted the request, and the customized Navitimer, later named the Cosmonaute, accompanied Carpenter on his historic mission on May 24, 1962, becoming the first Swiss wristwatch to journey into space.
Now the brand is releasing a limited edition of their 24-hour timepiece. An automatic chronograph with Breitling manufacture caliber B12. This new release is limited to 250 pieces. It boasts an 18k red-gold case measuring 41mm in diameter and 13.6mm in thickness, elegantly complemented by a deep green dial, golden numerals, date window, and a black alligator leather strap. Flipping the watch reveals the open caseback, showcasing the oscillating weight and the B12 movement. This manufacture caliber offers 70 hours of power reserve, and operates at 4Hz. The Navitimer B12 Chronograph 41 Cosmonaute Limited edition is priced at AED 90,300.
