A Stunning Dial Crafted from Rare Baltic Amber
Arnold & Son has unveiled the latest addition to its HM (Hour-Minute) collection: the HM Steel Amber. This timepiece is named for the rare Baltic amber used in its dial, a material formed from fossilized resin over millions of years. The HM collection pays tribute to John Arnold, a prominent 18th-century English watchmaker, embodying the brand's dedication to classical watchmaking with ultra-thin movements and designs inspired by traditional marine chronometers.
The HM Steel Amber features a polished stainless steel case measuring 39.5 mm in diameter and 7.82 mm in height, emphasizing its refined proportions. A domed sapphire crystal protects the dial, while the sapphire crystal case back offers a view of the finely finished movement. The case provides water resistance up to 30 meters.
Baltic amber, seldom used in watchmaking, is a fossilized resin from conifer trees that grew on the Baltic Sea coast approximately 44 million years ago. This material is light, almost laminated, and exhibits a unique color that changes upon exposure to air and light, ranging from pale yellow to brownish-red hues. Arnold & Son has selected a distinctive shade of pale yellow for the HM Steel Amber's dial, which occupies the entire face of the watch. With no complications, the dial is simply drilled at the center to accommodate the blued hour and minute hands. The brand's logo is printed in black at 12 o'clock, and black dots encircle the dial, marking the minutes in a classic design.
Powering the HM Steel Amber is the hand-wound A&S1001 calibre, an ultra-thin movement with a total thickness of just 2.7 mm, enabling the case's slim profile. Operating at a frequency of 3 Hz, it offers an impressive 90-hour power reserve. The movement is fully decorated, featuring Côtes de Genève stripes on its bridges, a rhodium-plated mainplate, snailed wheels, and blued screws that are chamfered and polished, contributing to its refined aesthetic.
Completing the watch is a green alligator leather strap with a yellow alligator leather lining and a stainless steel pin buckle. The HM Steel Amber is a limited edition of 38 pieces, priced at CHF 19,500, approximately AED 79,560.
